JACKSON PARK

GOLF CLUB

JULY NEWSLETTER

Dear Fellow Linksmen,

Summer salutations from your men’s club Board of Directors……  The heat has been turned up and it’s time for sunny summer golf.  Jackson Park has been playing awesome this year and is firm and fast for the season – perfect for the upcoming summer tournaments!  We hope to see you all out on the course – get out and enjoy the sunshine, time with family and friends, and of course lots of great golf this season!

Membership Update

We have been working hard to keep improving the club and all our tournaments.  Besides a couple new added events this year we are discussing more to come for next year as well.  All of your men’s club board are most happy to see the payouts so spread out this year.  One of our main goals for the 2014 season was to improve payout equity – more net money versus gross and more places in multiple divisions.   I would say mission accomplished so far!  It is nice to see so many new people winning money as well as the payouts distributed amongst more members.  We have numerous cool events left this year and lots of money to still give back to you, our members, who participate in them.  Check the website for our complete tournament schedule.  In addition to the entry fees that come in we are looking at around $2000 still to give out at the 6 remaining events – sign up, enjoy some golf, and win some money!

Code of Conduct

At our last meeting we discussed a code of conductfor our members playing in club tournaments.  After much deliberation we felt that frankly it was up to all of us to adhere to the existing USGA code of conduct while playing golf period.  None of us are perfect and we all have our days at the course BUT we need to keep the spirit of the game in mind and our playing partners.  Excessive cursing and throwing of clubs should never happen.  I myself will try harder to keep it down as I hope all of you will as well.  Consider this in effect an official warning to all members – your Board of Trustees does not want to issue any penalties and/or disqualifications due to inappropriate behavior on the course.

Date Change for August 6/6/6 Tournament

Mark your calendars – the August 6/6/6 two-man event has moved from 8/16 to 8/9.  We discovered the Seattle Cup matches will be played that weekend and we wanted all men’s club members playing in the Seattle Cup matches to be able to play in the 6/6/6 as well.  Hope everyone can still make it that Saturday.

Utilize the Website

Please remember to check the website (jacksonparkmensgolfclub.org) for any information you may need or to contact any of us.  We are trying to make the site a communication hub for members.  Post on the message board if you looking for a partner for a two-man event or just a game at Jackson Park during week.  Or let us know any suggestions you may have to improve the club and tournaments.

Seattle Cup

The Seattle Cup matches will be conducted over two weekends – August 16/17 and August 23/24 – later this summer.  If you interested in being considered to represent Jackson Park as part of our team please contact Team Captain Dan “One” Puetz Sr. or Assistant Team Captain Jason “Brave” Hart.  Or certainly let any of your Trustees know and we will get you on the list of potential candidates.  Note the matches are over two weekends so please know if you can play either one or both.  Playing in Men’s Club Events and especially any or all of the three match play tournaments increases your chances of being chosen on the team.  The Board set up criteria for “qualifying” a few years ago including money list leaders, match play winners/runner ups and “captain picks.”  Please ask if you are interested in the requirements for qualifying.  Let us go and reclaim the trophy this year and bring it back to our clubhouse again!

Match Play/Club Championships

Heated play is underway in all three match play brackets – the Scratch, Handicap, and Two Man Team competitions.  There has been some great matches already and certainly some interesting match ups to come.  So far I have heard rumors of a 69 from Kyle “Golf Ball Killer” Johnson in the opening round of the handicap division.  Talk about making an early statement.  I myself witnessed what I believe is the first hole in one in club championship history at Jackson Park by our very own webmaster Doug “Never Nervous” Nevins on the second hole.  Great shot buddy – and thanks for the drink after our match.  Try and keep on schedule gentlemen so we can finish this before greens get punched in fall.   Good luck to all survivors and as the most interesting golfer in the world might say “Play well my friends.”

To all participants – the payouts have been decided using all entry fees and the club kicking in some extra money out of the general fund as we do for all tournaments.  We feel paying down some more places is equitable for all.

Scratch Division – Champion – $200.  Runner-up – $100.  3rd/4th (Semifinal loser) – $50 each.

Handicap Division – Champion – $250.  Runner-up – $125.  3rd/4th (Semifinal loser) – $75 each.  5th/6th/7th/8th (Quarterfinal loser) – $25 each.

Two Man Division – Champion – $150 each team member.  Runner-up – $100 each team member.  3rd/4th (Semifinal loser) – $50 each team member.

We feel these are outstanding payouts for all – if you did not play this year be sure to sign up next year.  Match play is a blast!

Course Update

Summer is here and the course is in excellent shape.  Fast and firm conditions seem to be the norm these days.  Yes the rumor is true – we are finally going to get the driving range…..  I have seen the poles in the ground and a building going up for myself.  I am hearing buckets will be served this fall.  We will check with Trustee Lee Jones as to who will be taking the cash pot for our “guess the open date of the range” competition we held at the annual meeting.

Jackson Juniors

The men’s club is proud to sponsor the Jackson Juniors program.  Dan “One” Puetz Sr., our Junior Golf Coordinator, has been working hard to set up an excellent Junior Tournament this summer.  We as men’s club members need to get the word out and attract new junior members – these are the potential next generation of men’s club members!  This summer we are going to try a new twist – a Father/Son – Father/Daughter style tournament within the usual tournament.  It is set for August 18th.  As always we could use any members interested in helping.  Please contact Dan or myself and we will get you on the list.  The event is going all day and we need people to help both in the AM and/or PM if you can.  Everything from helping with the prizes, the BBQ, marshalling, set-up, clean-up – any would be appreciated.  Dan and the board thanks you in advance for your help….. Let’s make this the best junior program around!

Finally I say “thank you” to all of you – our loyal JPMGC members – for continuing to support the men’s club.  Let’s enjoy a great summer of golf!  Hope to see all of you at Dick Rovig Day this coming Saturday for the biggest event of the year.  Come and help us honor a longtime Jackson Park Men’s Club officer and a fine gentlemen Mr. Dick Rovig.  There will be some fun side games going as well as regular individual stroke play.  Sign up by this Thursday July 17th by simply calling the pro shop or stopping by in person.  Be sure to come early and try the putting and chipping competitions.  See you all on Saturday!

Sincerely,

Trevor Cameron

JPMGC President
