JACKSON PARK GOLF CLUB

APRIL NEWSLETTER

Dear Fellow Linksmen,

On behalf of all of your Board of Trustees welcome to another year of great golf and fun in the Jackson Park Men’s Golf Club!  I trust everyone enjoyed the holidays and stayed warm this winter…… and hopefully dusted off their clubs at least once in a while and mucked it around.  First of all, in case you missed it – Yes, it is true, the Seahawks did win it all.  I honestly had to get up and turn on ESPN the next morning to double check and make sure it wasn’t just a dream.  Apologies to any members that were Broncos fans.  Well spring has now sprung and finally the days get longer.  Now bring on some sunshine and let the golf begin!

Membership Update

It is that time of year again – if you haven’t yet done so renew your GHIN handicap with Jackson Park Men’s Golf Club.  You can download a membership form off our website at jacksonparkmensgolfclub.org and mail it in.  We also have a lock box at the Jackson Park pro shop – you can fill out form and leave with payment next time you are at the course.  Yearly membership dues remain $70 this year.

Make sure to explore the new website – it is up and running with all kinds of new bells and whistles.  Doug Nevins, Trustee and Web Meister, has done a fabulous job with the new site.  On the membership page all the benefits of membership are listed – remember to use your pro shop discount!  The website will keep you updated on all club activities and tournaments as well as allow you to contact any of your humble servants on the Board of Trustees.

The board appointed a tournament committee last fall and they have been working hard on improving our existing events as well as instituting a few new ones.  The board really wanted to make the payouts as equitable as possible – focusing on spreading the payouts around especially to the higher handicap players.  We felt too much money was going to gross payouts and not enough to net payouts.  The results of the first two events – 20 different players have earned money already!  John Clements, our tournament director, along with Jeff Schoening, Kyle Johnson, and Jason Hart deserve special thanks for all their efforts in making these changes happen.  Be sure to join us for tournaments this year and win some money!

Two of our primary goals each year as a board and club are to increase our membership and to increase tournament participation from all our members.  I am personally pleased to see a lot of new names showing up on the membership list so far this year.  Please continue to help us gain new members.  We have a great club, golf course, and a nice array of events to play in.  With the range coming soon our club has a great opportunity to gain access to numerous potential members.  It is up to us to get the word out and grow our membership.  Your Board of Trustees will continue to work towards this goal with your help.  Thank you again for continuing to support the men’s club!

Clyde Carlson Day

Annual Banquet and Meeting

Our annual Clyde Carlson Day honors a longtime member and supporter of the men’s club – guess who? – Clyde Carlson!  Some hardy golfers attended the 9 hole tournament preceding our annual meeting and banquet.  Congratulations to the winning sandbaggers of the day……..

Low Gross – 37 – Mark “Double Titanium Ball” Ohrenschall

Low Net – 31 – Dan “One” Puetz Sr.

We thank all our loyal members who attended the annual meeting and banquet on Clyde Carlson day.  Everyone who came had great food and drink, honored our champion golfers of the year and conducted our annual business meeting and elections.  Thank you to Josh, Anthony and all the staff at Jackson Park for hosting us.  The men’s club conducted a large raffle/auction and gave away lots of golf treasures.   Over $1200 worth of golf treasures!  Carl LeBoa was the lucky and most deserving drawing winner for the free 2014 annual membership.  We are already discussing ideas for next January’s frivolities. Details to come…..

Our annual 3-club competition was held on Saturday February 22nd in the midst of rain, wind, and some snow.  Bad weather and only 3 clubs?  A true test of manly fortitude.  Here were the winning warriors of the day….. If my math is correct that would mean $28.66 a club for first…..

April Tournament

Mark your calendars – Spring Field Day will commence on Saturday April 19th.  Remember to sign up for the tournament at the pro shop by the end of day Thursday preceding the event.  No late entries will be accepted!  This will be the first big event of the year and usually attracts a large field – thus a large payout……. Come and win some money!  As mentioned we have tweaked the payout structure – if you have not tried tournament play give it a try.  Guaranteed you will have a blast and you may just win some money!

The board has voted to eliminate the $5 lunch coupon as part of the tournament.  Starting with this event the tournament fee will now be $60 – not $65.  We felt it was more prudent to reduce the fee than add the extra money into the prize fund at this time – but would appreciate any input from members.  Please let us know if you have any thoughts.

Match Play/Club Championships

We invite all our members to participate in the match play events that play out over summer.  The men’s club runs scratch, net, and 2-man net competitions that represent our club championships.  Each is $20 to sign up.  The Board of Trustees is trying to make the match play events bigger and better where more of you will want to jump in.  We are looking at paying down more places in the net bracket especially – Quarterfinalists, Semifinalists, and Winner/Runner-Up would all win money.  In the past it has always been Winner and Runner-Up winning only.  This year we are going to kick off all Net matches on Saturday June 7th if possible.  Gross and 2-man matches will begin early June at the players agreed upon time as usual.  Sign-up for all the brackets will run from April 15th to May 15th.  The brackets/opening round matches will be posted on the website as well as at the pro shop shortly after.  Each match will have a “play by date” time frame – the players must complete their matches at any agreed time by the play by date.  For example first round matches must be completed by June 15th, Second round by July 1st, and so on until we crown a champion for each bracket in late summer.   Please ask any of our Board of Trustees if you have questions.  Information is available at jacksonparkmensgolfclub.org.  Consider trying out these brackets – match play is a fun way to play!  That snowman only costs me one hole……  If you are looking for a partner in the 2-man competition let us know – we will try and find parings for people as well.

Course Update

The course has survived the winter and is shaping up for great spring golf.  The driving range building has been bid and accepted from what I am hearing.  Construction is set to commence in May.  Will we have our range this summer?  Stay tuned and keep all the fingers and toes crossed.  Mine have been since last April?  The second green is being improved as well.  Some of the sod has been replaced and it should improve the green for the long term.  It may be closed during week for a while the green heals but should be open for weekend play in the meantime.  The course will be shaping up for another great year for golf!

Jackson Juniors

The men’s club is proud to sponsor the Jackson Juniors program.  Dan Puetz Sr., our Junior Golf Coordinator[CC1] , has been working hard to set up an excellent Junior Tournament this summer.  We as men’s club members need to get the word out and attract new junior members – these are the potential next generation of men’s club members!  This summer we are going to try a new twist – a Father/Son – Father/Daughter style tournament within the usual tournament.  It is set for August 18th.  As always we could use any members interested in helping.  Please contact Dan or myself and we will get you on the list.  Thank you in advance for your help….. Let’s make this the best junior program around!

A special thank you to Bob LeMaster and Travis Jones who have agreed to serve on the board of trustees.  We will try not to torture them too bad – at least at first.  Let’s make this a year of great golf with the Jackson Park Men’s Golf Club!  On behalf of all the Trustees thank you once again for your continued support and hope to see you all out on the course.

Sincerely,

Trevor Cameron
