JPMGC Tuesday League Season Recap including our Tournament Winners

November 13, 2024

I hope you had fun in the Tuesday League season this year!  Some of the highlights of which I am aware include, a hole in one by Bob Cameron on Sep 24 (on hole 2 – his first!), an under-par round of 68 (gross) by Andy Graham (from the blue tees no less!), and an even-par round of 70 (gross) by Dylan Fitzgerald in the Tuesday Cup Final to win the Tuesday Cup!  I’m also sure that many of our players shot personal bests out there this season!  Please let me know during the season if you have a special highlight that you would like to share with the group – these highlights inspire all of us to strive toward our own goals!

This year, the Tuesday League held 29 daily tournaments (22 individual and 7 team events) including our majors: the Tuesday 2-day Championship and the three rounds of playoffs of the Tuesday Cup.

The winners of our major tournaments were:

Date Tournament Winning Gross score Gross Winner Winning Net Score Net Winner
7/9-7/16 2-day Championship, overall  +13 (153) Andy Graham  +1 (141) Steven Morrison
10/22 Tuesday Cup Final n/a n/a  -4 (136) Dylan Fitzgerald
10/15 Round 2 Playoff (Sweet 16)  +2 (64) Dan Fabela  -6 (56) Dan Fabela
10/8 Round 1 Playoff (4-club)  +4 (74) Mark Ohrenschall -1 (69) Bob Cowan

Note that in this table I’ve only included playoff participants as the winners of the playoff tournaments.

Winning rounds 1 or 2 of the playoff tournaments was very helpful in getting to the Tuesday Cup Final.  As you probably recall, 32 players entered round 1 of the playoffs, 16 players entered round 2, and 8 players entered the final.  By winning round 1 (net) Bob Cowan went from 29th place to 13th place and by winning round 2 (net) Dan Fabela went from 14th place to 8th place, securing his place in the Final.  The Tuesday Cup rules changed this year so that the playoff contenders competed directly head-to-head in net competitions (rather than using a 4x multiple of the points earned from the overall daily competitions).  This ensured that non-playoff players did not impact the relative places of the playoff contestants, and hopefully, led to a more fair result.

We held 15 traditional stroke play individual events this year.  The average winning gross score was 74.0 and the average winning net score was 66.9, which is an improvement over last year with 75.5 (avg winning gross) and 67.6 (avg winning net).  We had net winners playing from all three of our tee sets, but no one from the golds won gross this year (last year we had two gross winners from golds (we also had more people playing gold tees)).  The winners of our traditional stroke play individual tournaments are as follow:

Date Tournament Winning Gross score Gross Winner Winning Net Score Net Winner
3/26 Field Day 72 Mark Ohrenschall 67 Dan Fabela
4/2 Field Day – gold tees 76 Dylan Fitzgerald (gold) 70 Steve Spiegel (gold)
4/9 Field Day 76 Dylan Fitzgerald & Steve Brady 70 Dennis Mueller & JR Osuga
5/7 Field Day 68 Andy Graham (blue) 62 Andy Graham (blue)
5/21 Field Day 75 Justin Kim 69 Bob Cameron
6/4 Field Day 78 Gabe Weber 68 Ed Celentano
6/18 Field Day – Back tees 77 Gino Nathan (blue) 66 Mark McKinney (white)
7/9 Championship, day 1 75 Gino Nathan 63 John Dealy
7/16 Championship, day 2 71 Dylan Fitzgerald 67 Dylan Fitzgerald & Michael Foiles & Steven Morrison
7/30 Field Day 75 Dylan Fitzgerald 68 Doug Jones
8/20 Field Day 78 John Lloyd 67 Reed Johnson (gold)
9/3 Field Day 72 Mark Ohrenschall 67 Vance Wilson (blue)
9/24 Field Day 73 Dylan Fitzgerald 62 Danny Habeeb
10/3 2-for-1 Individual NET n/a n/a 70 Jay Clark & Mark Ohrenschall
10/22 Field Day (TU Cup Final) 70 Dylan Fitzgerald 67 Dylan Fitzgerald

Our average score on individual stroke play events was 89.5 (gross) and 76.1 (net).  So, if you want to be above average in scoring for the league, you need to shoot around or better than bogey golf.  But, you have plenty of company if you are shooting above bogey golf.  My hope is that through steady participation, we can all play our best 🙂

We held 8 non-traditional stroke play individual events this year.  The winners of our non-traditional stroke play individual tournaments are as follow:

Date Tournament Winning Gross score Gross Winner Winning Net Score Net Winner

10/1 2-for-1 2-man Best Ball  -12 (58) Dana Greely + Blind draw  -7 (63) Mike Mardesich + Dave Pope

Note that Dana Greeley won the flight 1 2-for-1 2-man best ball tournament on 10/1 with a “blind draw.”  A blind draw is a random player selected from the field that is used to make a 2-man team when a single player does not have a partner to play with in the competition.  The single’s and the blind draw’s scores
