Today we celebrated Lifetime Member Dick Rovig, who served as the club secretary and webmaster for many years. It was great to see him today. He watched his son Ted play the back nine. On the twelfth hole, he encountered a course ranger who knew him from high school. Amazing! Dick, in fond memory of his tournament scores, instituted the Mediocre Golfer award to the player who shoots the mean score in the Summer Field Day. This year the award goes to Bob Cameron, who just edged out Don Harrell.
Congratulations to Ryan Coghill and Danny Lee for Low Gross of Field – Blue Tees (75), to Van Luu for Low Gross of Field – White/Gold Tees (77), and to Ken Smith for Low Net of Field (66). Ken had a great turnaround, shooting 34 on the back after shooting 49 on the front. Lowest score by a nonagenarian goes to Jim Bickford, who tied for fourth net in the third flight. Mel Wattula and Randy Olin appear to have fully recovered from their knee surgeries. For more details on the scores and results, see Weekend Tournament Results. By the way, if you click on a players name, you can see their hole-by-hole scoring.
There were 58 players today. Fourteen played the blue tees and forty-four played white. The greens were fast. Twelve was a challenge. Scores have been posted on GHIN.
Pace of play
The tee sheet had no group at 9 am, so all the groups after that were moved up a spot. The resulting 9:00 and 9:10 groups had large gaps, but the 9:10 group played over 4:30 hours, so they received a one-stroke penalty. (The penalty was reduced from two strokes because of change in the tee time.) Those two groups slowed play down today. Before them, the groups were at or under the recommended 4:12 time. After them, no group was under 4:30, even when the gaps were consistently under ten minutes.
